Considering that the prices of fuel are increasing due to high demand and diminishing supply, users need to select an affordable fuel source that meets their requirements. Thanks to Rudolph Diesel’s invention, the diesel engine has proven to be extremely cost-effective, and more and more people are opting for diesel power units for sale.

Even though diesel is slightly more expensive than gasoline, it has a higher energy density, meaning that more energy is extracted from diesel. For that reason, diesel engines offer higher mileage, making them an obvious choice for equipment and heavy-duty transportation. We should mention that diesel is oilier and heavier than gasoline, and it has a boiling point higher than water.

Difference between gasoline and diesel engine

The distinction lies in the type of ignition. Gasoline operates on spark ignition while diesel engine uses compression to ignite the fuel. During this process, the air is drawn into the engine and subjected to high compression that heats it. This causes a very high temperature in the engine, much higher than in a gasoline engine.

When it comes to a diesel engine, fuel and air are infused into the engine at different stages than a gas engine, where a mix of air and gas is introduced. While a diesel engine uses an injector to injects the fuel, a gasoline engine has a carburetor for this purpose.

Benefits of diesel engines

Compared to gasoline engine, diesel one is much more preferable and efficient. Here are a couple of reasons why you should choose a diesel engine.

  • Diesel engines have come a long way; they are less noisy and require less maintenance than previous models.
  • They are more reliable and rugged.
  • There is no sparking, and the absence of spark wires minimizes maintenance costs.
  • Fuel price per KW produced is up to 50% lower than with gas engines.
  • An 1800 rpm water-cooled diesel unit can operate up to 30,000 hours before it requires any major maintenance and up to 10,000 before it needs servicing.
  • Be aware that gas unit burns hotter than diesel ones, meaning they have a shorter lifespan.

Use and application of diesel units

Diesel units are commonly used as power generators, mechanical engines, and mobile drives. Their use is widespread in countless industrial branches, automobiles, construction equipment, and locomotives.

Diesel-power generators and diesel engines have agricultural, underground, telecommunications, forestry, hospital, mining, marine, and construction application. And this is only to name a couple of them, while this use is more complex than this.

Power generators

Electrical generator sets or diesel power generators are used in numerous commercial and industrial establishments. For instance, generators can be used for small loads like homes and large loads such as commercial buildings, hospitals, and industrial plants, among others.

These types of units can either be a prime power source or a backup one. They come in various shapes and sizes, and 5-30 kW are mostly used for home, while industrial diesel generators range between 30 kW and 6 Megawatts.
